Primal Eating and Primal Living: Optimize Your Health and Natural Beauty

Your food, your dental care, and your skincare… it all ends up in your body and your bloodstream. So, you might be thinking… food… makes sense, but dental and skin care? Yep, it’s true! Today, I am going to tell you how and why it is important to pay attention to the foods that you eat and the products that you use.

The Paleo Diet

When you think historically about the humans that were alive tens of thousands of years ago, they would hunt their meat and gather fruits and vegetables from the earth. Those foods varied seasonally, depending upon the time of year that it was. Have you ever taken the time to question how foods that are meant to harvest during the fall are able to be produced all year long? The answer lies in the manufacturing and processing of our foods with chemicals.

Finding the right diet for you is extremely important for your health. Choosing foods that fuel your body and The Paleo diet, more commonly known as the “Caveman” or “Hunter/Gathering” diet, and sometimes referred to as “Primal eating” consists mostly of fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, healthy fats and oils, and nuts. There are a few variations of the Paleolithic Diet, where some are more plant-based and some more meat-based. However, this diet centralizes around the idea of limiting your consumption of processed foods. Non-processed, seasonal foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, roots, and organic meats digest more quickly than processed foods and aid in speeding up your metabolism. By maintaining a Paleo Diet compared to other diets, your body will transition into operating at its optimal health.

It’s important to question where our food and our products come from. If we don’t, we put ourselves at risk to consume chemicals that could make us sick and/or damage our bodies.

Natural Skincare

Did you know that many skincare and beauty products, especially in the United States, contain harmful chemicals that damage your skin and body? This is because your skin absorbs the products you put on your skin and through penetration of the skin, even enter your bloodstream. The American Journal of Public Health conducted a study on the skin’s absorption rates of chemicals in the mid-1980s.1 This study found the face to be several times more permeable than broad body surfaces and have an absorption rate of 100% for underarms and genitalia.2 Another peer-reviewed study showed 100% absorption for fragrance ingredients.3 These studies indicate that as consumers, we need to be vigilant about what we decide to put on our skin and choose fragrance-free products with natural ingredients.

Natural Dental Care

Like skincare, it is also important to be aware of what is in your dental care products for a multitude of reasons. In most toothpastes, fluoride is the main active ingredient. Fluoride can also commonly be found in tap water. Incidentally, a study by the National Center of Biotechnology Information4 (NCBI) in 2021, analyzed a study of the effect of fluoride on the brain’s pineal gland. The pineal gland in the brain is responsible for melatonin production and regulating the body’s sleep cycle. The study suggests and indicates that fluoride consumption interferes with the pineal gland’s ability to produce melatonin which prohibits the body from a complete REM cycle while they sleep. Sleep is key to a person’s health for a culmination of reasons including: improving your metabolism, improving stress throughout the day, increasing focus, improving your skin, and more.

Another reason why it is important to switch to natural dental care products is so that you can know exactly what is in your dental care. Fluoride also causes other health problems such as thyroid problems, higher risk for cancer, and more. Moreover, fluoride, when consumed and used constantly, can strip your teeth of enamel. It is important to use tooth products which strengthen your enamel.
