6 Reasons We NEVER Use Seed Oils at POTG
Seed oils – such as cottonseed oil, soybean oil, canola oil seem to be in everything. Furthermore, it seems like everyone is hating on them recently. And, for good reason! Luckily, we’ve been ahead of this trend and have NEVER used seed oils in any of our dishes (nor will we ever.)
Here are our top 6 reasons why we hate seed oils at POTG:
1. They’re not AIP
While the REASONS for seed oils not being AIP are largely what follows in this list, we must start off by saying we don’t use any seed oils because they are absolutely not AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) friendly.
2. Instability
When seed oils become heated and exposed to oxygen, trans fats are produced. And, we all know how toxic trans fats are to the human body!
3. Taste
This can not be understated or overlooked! Seed oils simply taste terrible! In fact, they taste and smell so bad that deodorizers are often added. This is simply another major reason to avoid them altogether.
4. PUFAs
Seed oils don’t have to be highly processed to be harmful to your health. They contain PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) which are easily oxidizable and very inflammatory to your organs.
5. Not traditionally used
Science aside, and it is pretty damning to say the least, there’s a very straight-forward reason to avoid seed oils like the plague – none of our ancestors ever consumed it! Before about 100 years ago, no human ever consumed seed oils because it simply was not considered edible. Let’s learn from our past!
6. Did we mention taste?!
Ok, maybe we already mentioned taste. But, you will never find any seed oils or vegetable oils that can compare to things like beef tallow, lard, or butter. It’s simply not possible! If it came down solely to taste, animal fats would win every single time!
