Top 5 Reasons to Go Dairy-Free!

Top 5 Reasons to Go Dairy-Free!

Here are the TOP 5 health benefits of going dairy-free, from Certified Trainer and Nutrition Coach Lindsey Day.

BENEFIT 1: Lactose Malabsorption is Very Common

While a smaller percentage of people have full-blown lactose intolerance, can you believe that nearly 70% of adults have a reduced ability to digest lactose (the sugar in milk)?!1,2 This is called “lactose malabsorption.” Basically, a human’s ability to break down lactose declines with age. Did you know humans were meant to drink our mother’s milk during breastfeeding years and then meant to STOP drinking milk? We know this because when we look at the lactase enzyme that breaks down milk lactose, we see it decline in pretty much every human being as they age. There’s a sharp drop in lactase through the adult years.

FYI- Hard cheeses and yogurt are less problematic than milk due to the lower amounts of lactose and natural probiotics in yogurt. Some can get away with small amounts of these without too much issue.

BENEFIT 2: Reduce Bloating and other Digestive Problems:

If you’re like the vast majority of people just described, this means the lactose doesn’t get digested and makes it further down into your digestive tract than it should. When the bacteria in your lower intestines feed on this it produces gas, bloating, and digestive problems.

BENEFIT 3: Improve Brain Health (focus, concentration, reduce headaches)

Because the gut and brain are so intricately connected, dairy consumption can create brain fog and headaches.

BENEFIT 4: Improve Hormones and Reduce Risk of Certain Cancers

Conventional dairy products contain antibiotics, hormones and pesticides that essentially contaminate our bodies and can negatively impact our normal hormonal function. Dairy is linked to higher risk for various cancers, especially prostate and breast cancers, likely related to insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) in cow’s milk.-3-5

This problem can be solved by purchasing good quality dairy products! If you DO choose to consume dairy, it’s important to stick with organic dairy products, from grass-fed cows to avoid ingesting harmful hormones in conventional dairy products. P.S. Good quality dairy will NOT solve the first problem discussed (lactose malabsorption).

BENEFIT 5: Fix Acne

Dairy is one of the biggest culprits for acne! An acne cure with an amazing track record is to get dairy out of the diet!
